The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, widely regarded as the EFCC is the top Federal Government anti-graft agency that is charged with investigating cases of corruption such as economic and financial crimes like bribery, money laundering, advance fee fraud popularly known in Nigeria as 419 or “Yahoo Yahoo”, etc.

The agency was established under the administration of Former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo in 2004 with Mallam Nuhu Ribadu as its pioneer chairman. The Commission was empowered to prevent, investigate, prosecute and penalise economic and financial crimes and the Act establishing the agency mandates the EFCC to enforce the provisions of other laws and regulations relating to economic and financial crimes, including:

• The Money Laundering (Prohibition) act 2004
• The Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 1995

• Miscellaneous Offences Act

The Operations Department of the Commission is the engine room of all investigation activities carried out by the EFCC and it is responsible for the investigation of all cases that fall within the mandate of the Commission. Such cases include infractions that are contrary to the provisions of the Commission’s enabling law; the EFCC Act 2004 as well as a group of other laws which the Commission has direct responsibility for their enforcement. Some of the laws include the Money Laundering Act 2011, the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act 2006, The Failed Banks (Recovery of Debt) and Financial Malpractices in Banks Act and the Miscellaneous Offences Act
