At the moment, there are Federal Medical Centres, or FMCs as they are more often known, in 21 States across the federation. In Nigeria today, primary healthcare facilities are run at the local government level to provide people with basic healthcare, secondary healthcare is provided by the various State governments through general hospitals, and tertiary healthcare is provided by either federal medical centres or teaching hospitals run by many federally funded universities.

In order to ensure that its citizens have access to high-quality healthcare, the Federal Government of Nigeria made sure to create at least one tertiary healthcare facility in each of the States of the Federation. As a result, Federal Medical Centres (FMCs) were strategically placed throughout the nation in States without Federal University Teaching Hospitals. Lagos State used to be an exception to this criterion since it has both a teaching hospital and an FMC, but in more recent years, the criteria has been significantly changed to allow an FMC in other States that also have university hospitals.

All Federal Medical Centres are required by the laws that established them to provide high-quality, reasonably-priced, specialized/tertiary level hospital care to the public, with the ultimate goal of lowering the burden of disease on communities through prompt and emphatic preventive, curative, and rehabilitative services.
