There are over 20 teaching hospitals in Nigeria and these teaching hospitals are affiliated to the medical schools of the various universities in the country where they are situated. The hospitals were established by the government to help medical students receive medical training in their chosen career path.
These federal and state government owned hospitals in the country combine the services of a normal, regular hospital, the teaching of medical students, and medical research all together. Some teaching hospitals also offer physician residency programmes, where medical school graduates train under a supervising physician to assist with the coordination of care. Many university hospitals also serve as research institutes in the country.
