If you reside in Lagos, just like it is very important to have the official emergency helplines in Lagos State, which includes the fire and ambulance services, it is equally very important to have in your phone book, the official emergency phone numbers of the police in Nigeria. Those living in other parts of the country are also advised to have the official emergency numbers of the Nigeria Police as well. This, in addition to other official emergency helplines in Nigeria can go a long way to helping the citizens of the country at times when something serious and unexpected happens, something requiring immediate action.
In Nigeria today, the official helplines of the police are hotlines that you can contact for immediate action and response by the officers and men of our primary law enforcement agency. Many Nigerians are ignorant of the hotlines of the police in the country and they are quick to say it is 911 when asked. But this is not true as 911 is not a Nigerian emergency number but that of the United States of America. Hence if a Nigerian finds themselves in an emergency situation and dials 911, it will not go through.
This is what happens sometimes and is one of the chief reasons why some Nigerians are quick to blame the Police whenever a situation that needs urgent control goes out of hand. They dial the wrong number and when it doesn’t go through, some are forced assume that the Police in the country is incompetent to make available such helplines which do not go through. The reason for this post is to educate many Nigerians on the right police numbers to contact when they are in trouble, in distress and need urgent help.
In the country presently, the generally approved emergency police numbers are 112 and 199. These numbers can be contacted in many States of the Federation when there are emergency issues and the police will respond. The numbers are also the emergency hotlines of the Federal Fire service or ambulance services in the country. You should also be aware that apart from 112 or 199, you can contact the Nigeria Police directly through certain telephone numbers that are readily available in each State of the Federation.
Do not forget that these numbers are emergency phone numbers and are not for enquiries on other issues outside the primary purpose for which they are to serve.
