YABA COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY (YABATECH): SCHOOL OVERVIEW

Yaba College of Technology, most widely regarded as YABATECH, is the premier higher educational institution in Nigeria (This includes Polytechnics and Universities). The school was established in the year 1947, and it is located in Yaba, a suburb of Lagos State located on the Mainland, hence its name. Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) succeeded the Yaba Higher College which was established in 1932 as an affiliate of the University of London. The Higher College staff were later moved to Ibadan to start the University of Ibadan in 1948 while its premises was used to commence academic activities for the new Yaba College of Technology.

YABATECH attained autonomous status in 1969 by virtue of Decree 23 which granted it the mandate to provide full-time and part-time courses of instruction and training in technology, applied science, commerce and management, agricultural production and distribution; and for research. This decree represented a major step towards the development of the College. It is significant to note that Yaba College of Technology was the only College offering Higher Diploma courses in Nigeria until the year 1979 when the Federal Polytechnics act 1979 was promulgated.

The Yaba College of Technology is the first higher institution in the country to establish a Centre for Entrepreneurship Development, with linkages with the world of commerce and industry. This Centre offers compulsory courses which must be taken by all students throughout their stay in the College. The Polytechnic has eight schools and thirty-four academic departments with a total of seventy accredited programmes, across ND, HND and Post-HND levels.

The School is also one of the few Polytechnics in the country that awards the Bachelor of Science degree in Education B.Sc (Ed), exclusively reserved for universities, in Technical and Vocational Education, as well as Postgraduate Diplomas in Engineering and Urban and Regional Planning. These programmes are run in conjunction with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and the Federal University of Technology, Akure.

There is a Quality Assurance Unit in the College which monitors the quality of academic service delivery at the school. YABATECH has a second campus located in Epe, on the Island of Lagos and in this campus is domiciled the Department of Agricultural Technology, Agric and Bio Engineering, Leisure and Tourism, School of Technical Education, and Michael Otedola Information and Communication Centre.
