Marriage registries in Nigeria perform statutory marriages between a man and a woman otherwise known as court wedding and this is a monogamous union. The various marriage registries in the country are all regulated by the Nigerian Marriage Act, Cap 218, Laws of the Federation, 1990.

In the country currently, there are marriage registries located in many parts of the federation and while some, about seven (7) of them are currently operated by the Federal Government of Nigeria, others are operated by the various local governments scattered across the country all for the purpose of statutory marriage celebrations as we shall see below.
