This article is about the full list of all registered political parties in Nigeria this 2024. A political party is a group of people with the same ideology and opinions in politics. As a large group, political parties are organizations that compete in a country’s elections by bringing out their candidates to run for political offices. These political parties are essential institutions of democracy and they offer the citizens the choice to vote for their preferred candidate during an election year. In Nigeria today, political parties in power are termed the ruling party, while those who lost an election are termed the opposition, and they hold the ruling party which makes up the the government in power accountable for their every decision.

Political parties in Nigeria are run by a national working committee, who have a strong leader whose responsibility is to ensure that the party is run smoothly across all States in the country that are their strongholds; the party executives also known as the working committee at national and State levels perform administrative and organizational tasks. Then there are the party members, who may volunteer to help the party, donate money to it, and vote for its candidates during elections. There are many different ways in which political parties can be structured and interact with the electorate. The contributions that citizens give to political parties are often regulated by law, and parties will sometimes govern in a way that favours the people who donate time and money to them.

When citizens join political parties, volunteer their time, donate money and vote for their leaders, they are exercising their basic democratic rights. Participation of citizens in political parties offers unique benefits, including opportunities to influence policy choices, choose and engage political leaders, and run for office. In Nigeria today, there are eighteen (18) political parties duly registered and recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the main electoral body that oversees elections in Nigeria whose functions include the following:

• Organise, undertake and supervise all elections to the offices of the President and Vice-President, the Governor and Deputy Governor of a State, and to the membership of the Senate, the House of Representatives and the House of Assembly of each State of the federation;
• Register political parties in accordance with the provisions of the constitution and Act of the National Assembly;
• Monitor the organization and operation of the political parties, including their finances; conventions, congresses and party primaries.
• Arrange for the annual examination and auditing of the funds and accounts of political parties, and publish a report on such examination and audit for public information;
• Arrange and conduct the registration of persons qualified to vote and prepare, maintain and revise the register of voters for the purpose of any election under this constitution;
• Monitor political campaigns and provide rules and regulations which shall govern the political parties;
• Conduct voter and civic education;
• Promote knowledge of sound democratic election processes; and
• Conduct any referendum required to be conducted pursuant to the provision of the 1999 Constitution or any other law or Act of the National Assembly.
