Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of Nigeria is the seat of power of the federation and it is geographically located at the centre of the country in the North-Central geopolitical zone. Being the Federal Capital Territory, you can expect Abuja to be blessed with an abundance of universities and the Centre of Unity does not disappoint in this regard as within it is located six universities, one of which is owned by the Federal Government of Nigeria, while the remaining five are operated by private individuals.

UNIVERSITY OF ABUJA, GWAGWALADA
The University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) was established on January 1st, 1988 as a dual-mode university with the mandate to run both conventional and distance learning academic programmes. It was the first University in the country to assume such a dual mandate at inception. The university currently has nine faculties, a College of Health Sciences, a School of Remedial Studies, a Centre for Distance Learning, an Institute of Education, a School of Postgraduate Studies, among others. The UofA of Nigeria has a student population of 55,364 and a staff strength of 3,362.
The vision of the University is to develop an institution of higher learning that combines academic excellence with the pursuit of the unity of Nigeria while their mission is to provide instructional, research, and public service programmes appropriate to a university of high standing that guarantees academic excellence and to operate a strong and virile distance learning component that ensures equal educational access to a large constituency.
NILE UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, JABI, ABUJA
Nile University of Nigeria is a private University located in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria. It is the most expensive university in Nigeria today. In 2009, the University was established to provide high-quality tertiary education for the country’s ever-increasing number of secondary school leavers. At the time of formation, Nile University had three faculties (Arts & Social Sciences, Engineering, and Natural & Applied Sciences) and 93 students.
As the University grew and thrived over the following years, the need to provide its high-quality instruction at a higher level became increasingly apparent. In the year 2014, Nile University established its School of Postgraduate Studies, and in 2020, the school joined the Honoris United Universities network, the first and largest pan-African private higher education network. Today, Nile University has over 4000 students (undergraduate and postgraduate), 34 undergraduate programmes across six faculties, and 47 postgraduate programmes across five faculties.
BAZE UNIVERSITY, ABUJA

Baze delivers quality by having experienced international staff, superb teaching equipment, overseas external examiners, and first-rate buildings to guarantee standards. Baze aims to provide university education to British standards in Nigeria at about half the cost of sending a student to study abroad. Currently, no Nigerian university is rated in the top 5,000 in the world. Many Nigerians thus feel compelled to send their sons and daughters to be educated abroad, at substantial cost (at least $28,000 per year for tuition, travel and living expenses). Baze delivers the same quality of education and living at about $14,000 – and, at a critical stage of their lives, students will be staying closer to their families.
The main Campus is 6km from Abuja Central Area, on Jabi Airport Road Bypass Ring Road. Academic/Social activities commenced in the Academic and Administrative (Ahmadu Abubakar) building, the Social Area and the Sports Complex. Baze has another site at Bwari for further development. Abuja is in the centre of Nigeria, and has excellent air and road links. Baze began in April 2011 with a Foundation class and three Faculties: Management & Social Scences; Law; Computing & Applied Sciences. Currently Baze University has 6 Faculties which includes the three (3) foundational faculties, Faculty of Engineering, Basic Medical and Environmental Sciences.
VERITAS UNIVERSITY, BWARI, ABUJA
Veritas University was founded by the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria through a resolution given at its March 2002 meeting in Abuja. The initiative came from the Bishops’ quest for a University that would provide high quality tertiary education according to the noble tradition of the Catholic Church. The University emphasizes strong moral values, self-reliance and the development of the students’ entrepreneurial capabilities for the social and economic benefit of the graduates and the Nigerian society.
This is an appropriate response to Pope John Paul II’s call for Catholic Universities to be instruments for the educational advancement of the people of God expressed in his Encyclical Letter, Ex Corde Ecclesiae No. 30. A provisional License to operate the University was granted by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in May 2007. The permanent site of the University is located in Bwari, Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. However, the University commenced admission of students in October 2008, for the 2008/2009 academic year at its take-off campus in Obehie Town, Abia State, Nigeria.
The University seeks to provide higher education and balanced training in an atmosphere of peace without discriminating against or excluding other students of their society provided that they are academically qualified and socially fit to study in the University. AFRICAN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (AUST), GALADIMA, ABUJA
