This article is about the full list of all universities in Lagos State this 2024. Lagos State is one of the Yoruba speaking States in the South-Western geopolitical zone of Nigeria, and it is home to one of the major ethnic groups and tribes in Nigeria. Lagos State is also one of richest States in the country, as well as part of the most educated, and the most Populated States in our land. There are nine universities situated in Lagos State today; of the eight, two are owned and run by the Federal Government of Nigeria, one is operated by the Lagos State Government, while the other six are privately owned. These universities are:

NATIONAL OPEN UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA (NOUN)
The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), is an Open and Distance Learning (ODL) institution, the first of its kind in the West African sub-region. The university has an exciting platform where learning is not only easily accessible, but also affordable. The vibrant university, at present, has 63 study centres spread across the federation, and its student population is over 120,000, making it the largest university in Nigeria by population of students. This Federal Government University was first established in the country on July 22, 1983 as a springboard for open and distance learning in Nigeria.
It was later suspended by the government on April 25, 1984 until April 12, 2001 when it was resuscitated by the former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo. At Official take off of the university, pioneer student enrollment stood at 32,400. The University headquarters is located at Plot 91, Cadastral Zone, Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway, Jabi, Abuja, with its Lagos administrative office situated in Victoria Island, Eti-Osa Local Government Area, Lagos State.
UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS (UNILAG)
The University of Lagos is one of the most prestigious federal universities in Nigeria. It is a top ranking university for almost everything academics in the country and it is located in Akoka, Yaba, Lagos State. UNILAG was established in 1962, making it one of the oldest universities in Nigeria and it presently has three Campuses in Yaba and Surulere. Whereas two of its Campuses are located in Yaba (the main campus in Akoka and the recently created campus at the former School of Radiography), its College of Medicine is located in Idi-Araba, Surulere. It is remarkable that all the three campuses are located in the Mainland of Lagos.
The main Campus of the school is largely surrounded by the scenic view of the Lagos lagoon on 802 acres of land in Akoka, North-Eastern part of Yaba. From a modest intake of 131 students in 1962, enrolment in the university has now grown to over 40,000. The University’s staff strength is 3,365 made up of 1,386 Administrative and Technical; 1,164 Junior, and 813 Academic Staff. The University of Lagos (UNILAG) currently has twelve Faculties, namely, Arts, Basic Medical Sciences, Business Administration, Clinical Sciences, Dental Sciences, Education, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Law, Pharmacy, Science, and Social Sciences.
The School also offers Master’s and Doctorate degrees in most of the aforementioned programmes. In addition, it has two Centres, namely, the Centre for Human Rights and the Centre for African Regional Integration and Borderland Studies. The Distance Learning Institute (DLI) of the University also offers courses in Accounting, Business Administration, Science Education and Library/Information Sciences.
LAGOS STATE UNIVERSITY (LASU)
The Lagos State University (LASU), located at Ojo, was established as a Public University in 1983 by the enabling law of Lagos State. This State University was established with the vision of pursuing the advancement of learning and academic excellence, the university has been unrelenting in the pursuit of its mission of becoming a citadel of learning, a community with the trademark of excellence in teaching, research and service to humanity, a catalyst as well as an agent for development.
The Lagos State University currently operates three major campuses in Ojo, Ikeja, and Epe. The Ojo campus is the Main Campus and the seat of the Central Administration. It houses the faculties of Arts, Education, Law, Management Sciences, Science and Social Sciences, School of Transport, School of Communication, Centre for Environment Studies and Sustainable Development (CESSED), Centre for General Nigerian Studies, Centre for Planning Studies, Information and Communication Technology Centre (ICTC), Online and Distance Learning and Research Institute (ODLRI) and Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies. The Postgraduate School is also on the Ojo Campus. The Ikeja Campus is home to the University College of Medicine (LASUCOM). The Epe campus accommodates the Faculty of Engineering, the School of Agriculture and the Institute for Organic Agriculture and Green Economy.
AUGUSTINE UNIVERSITY ILARA-EPE (AUI)
Augustine University is a private Catholic University located in Epe, Lagos State. The vision of the school was conceived by the Former Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, His Eminence, Anthony Cardinal Okogie and the University always upheld the noble tradition of Catholic Higher Education of achieving intellectual, cultural and moral excellence by preparing students for leadership and enterprise. This School was licensed to commence operation on March 5, 2015 and it was inaugurated on October 23, 2015. Academic activities began with the resumption of 100-level students into approved programmes on November 30, 2015. The maiden matriculation took place on April, 1, 2016.
CALEB UNIVERSITY, IKORODU
Caleb University is a faith based private university in Lagos State that is envisioned to be a centre of excellence through the provision of opportunities for respectable, highly qualitative and relevant university education that will engender the production of future leaders imbued with ability and integrity capable of impacting positively on their environments while also being globally competitive. The mission, which flows from the vision, is to create a unique institution committed to the pursuit of academic innovation, skills-based training and a tradition of excellence in teaching, research and community service.
Caleb University, Ikorodu, which was the only bachelor’s degree awarding private university in Lagos State, came into existence, following the approval by the Federal Government of Nigeria on May 2, 2007, rapidly followed up with the issuance of Operating Licence by the Federal Ministry of Education through the National Universities Commission (NUC) on May 17, 2007 for Caleb University to operate as a private university.
The university started with the College of Pure and Applied Sciences and its 4 Departments and 11 Degree Programmes; and the College of Social and Management Sciences and its 5 Departments and 5 Degree Programmes, commenced full academic programme with admission of its first set of students, a total of 83 male and 58 female students on Monday, January 21, 2007, it has since grown to be a leading private university in Nigeria as a whole.
PAN-ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY (PAU)
Pan-Atlantic University was established in the year 2002, it is a private university located in Lekki, Lagos State. The founders of Pan-Atlantic University were inspired in beginning this educational project by the teachings of St. Josemaria Escrivá, the founder of Opus Dei. This university is truly world class and in it is housed the famous Lagos Business School, one of the best business schools in Nigeria today.
ANCHOR UNIVERSITY
Anchor University was Founded in 2014, the University is a non-profit private higher education institution located in the urban setting of Ayobo-Ipaja, Lagos. This institution also has a branch campus in Ipaja area, Lagos. Officially accredited and recognized by the National Universities Commission, Nigeria. Anchor University, Lagos is a young evangelical co-educational higher education institution.
The university, which is owned by the Deeper Life Christian Ministry, offers course and programmes leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees in several areas of study. This young higher-education institution has a selective admission policy based on the entrance examinations and students’ past academic record and grades.
EKO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES
Eko University of Medicine and Health Sciences (EkoUNIMED) is a specialised, privately owned, medical, non-sectarian, and co-educational institution. The school is a pioneer Private Medical University not only in Nigeria, but also in West Africa. With a mission to develop world-class human resources to meet global development challenges; the university offers courses in Medicine and Surgery, Nursing Science, Dentistry and Dental Surgery, and other medical allied programmes as well as ICT. JAMES HOPE UNIVERSITY
James Hope University, Lekki, Lagos, is a postgraduate university committed to cutting edge international standards of education.
