This is the complete list of all universities in Oyo State as of 2023. Oyo State is one of the Yoruba speaking States in Nigeria, located in the country’s south-western geopolitical zone. Oyo State is one of Nigeria’s most populous states, with a young population eager to attend school and receive a formal education. Today, Oyo State is home to ten universities, one of which is owned and operated by the Federal Government of Nigeria, two by the Oyo State Government, and the remaining seven are privately owned.

UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN (UI)
The University of Ibadan, or UI as it is colloquially known, was established in 1948 and is Nigeria’s first university. It was a College of the University of London in a special relationship scheme until 1962, when it became a full-fledged independent University. The school, which is one of the oldest universities in Nigeria, began with academic programmes in the arts, sciences, and medicine, but has grown into a comprehensive learning institution with academic programmes in sixteen faculties: arts, science, basic medical sciences, clinical sciences, agriculture, social sciences, education, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, technology, law, public health, dentistry, economics, renewable natural resources, and environmental design and management. The school also has other academic centres and institutes for the advancement of research in the country.
LADOKE AKINTOLA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY (LAUTECH), OGBOMOSO
LAUTECH (Ladoke Akintola University of Technology) is a tertiary institution in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Nigeria. The university has over 30,000 students and employs over 3,000 people, including contract workers. Governor Adetunji Olurin, then Military Governor of Oyo State (now divided into two states: Oyo and Osun), received a request from the Governing Council of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, in 1987, to establish a State University. In 1988, he convened a seven-member interministerial committee, chaired by Mrs. Oyinkan Ayoola, to recommend the establishment of the university. Nigeria’s federal military government had accepted the State’s request by March 13, 1990. Colonel Sasaenia Oresanya signed the edict establishing Oyo State University of Technology on April 23, 1990.
Olusegun Ladimeji Oke was the university’s first Vice-Chancellor. In January 1991, the late Bashorun M.K.O. Abiola became the first Chancellor. On October 19, 1990, the university started its inaugural academic session with 436 students enrolled in four faculties: Agricultural Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Engineering and Management Sciences, and Pure and Applied Sciences. A year later, a College of Health Sciences was formed. Following the partition of Osun and Oyo states, the university’s name was changed to Ladoke Akintola University of Technology.
FIRST TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY, IBADAN
First Technical University, or Tech-U as it is widely known, is dedicated to providing internationally recognized degree programmes through collaboration with foreign institutions and industry stakeholders. It is Nigeria’s premier technical university, with a focus on entrepreneurship, innovation, and long-term sustainability. The Oyo State Government founded the university to bridge the skill gap between university graduates’ competencies and industry requirements through a combination of theory, practical, and hands-on experiences.
The University is well positioned to lead the way in developing a sound technical educational system based on innovations and technology to drive development in Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole. The University has a total of 15 academic programmes approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC). AJAYI CROWTHER UNIVERSITY (ACU), IBADAN
Ajayi Crowther University, also known as ACU, is a private institution in Oyo State. It was founded by the Supra Diocesan Board (West) of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) and has its roots in the defunct CMS training facility in Abeokuta and the defunct St. Andrews College in Oyo. The church of Nigeria approved the request to create the university in 1999, and the university was awarded a license to operate as a private university in Nigeria on January 7, 2005, after meeting stringent requirements set by the National Universities Commission (NUC). The university is named after Late Samuel Ajayi Crowther, the first African Bishop to translate the Bible into Yoruba.
LEAD CITY UNIVERSITY (LCU), IBADAN
Lead City University, Ibadan (LCU) is a private University approved by the Federal Government of Nigeria. It has graduated nine sets of students. The school offers various programmes suitable for both the young adolescents and adult working class. It indeed recognises the need to accomodate the time constraints to individuals and therefore provides flexibility by allowing for a choice between part-time & full-time study schemes. Programmes are offered by specialized faculties in Social Sciences & Entrepreneurial Studies, Information Technology & Applied Sciences, and Law.

KOLA DAISI UNIVERSITY, IBADAN
In November 2016, the National Universities Commission granted Kola Daisi University (KDU) a license to operate as a Private University, following approval by the Federal Executive Council. The Kola Daisi Foundation is the owner of the university, which was founded by Chief Kola Daisi, CON, Bashorun of Ibadan (KDF). The Founder’s involvement in Nigerian education may be traced back to the foundation of the Kola Daisi Foundation in 1993.
Through its various donations and contributions to Nigerian universities, endowment of prizes, award of scholarships, and operation of the Vocational Skills Acquisition Programme to address youth unemployment, underemployment, and restiveness through training and retraining of unemployed youths, the Foundation has already made numerous impacts on the lives of many Nigerians. As a result, the Foundation has accumulated years of expertise in providing youth education and training, as well as collaboration with higher education and training institutions throughout the country. Chief Kola Daisi’s ambition to increase his involvement in the provision of education and training for youths culminated in the founding of a university that will be a legacy for future generations.

DOMINICAN UNIVERSITY (DU), IBADAN
Dominican University, Ibadan was founded in 2016 and is a private higher education institution located in Ibadan, Oyo. Dominican University, Ibadan (DU) is a coeducational higher education institution linked with the Christian-Catholic Church that is accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) of Nigeria. Dominican University (DU), Ibadan, offers courses and programmes that lead to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor’s degrees in a variety of fields.
PRECIOUS CORNERSTONE UNIVERSITY (PUC), IBADAN
Precious Cornerstone University (PCU), a faith-based educational institution, was founded in 2017 as a project of visionaries working in cooperation with the Most High God to complete Africa’s independence and beautifying via teaching, learning, research, and community service. The Prestigious University was founded and promoted by Bishop Francis Wale Oke, the Founder and Presiding Bishop of the Sword of the Spirit Ministries, together with numerous founding members, including the university’s Governing Council. The institution was approved to operate in 2017 after a long wait for clearance. ATIBA UNIVERSITY, OYO
