This is a comprehensive list of all the approved/accredited federal polytechnics in Nigeria currently in this year 2024. Polytechnics in the country are the second highest tertiary institutions of learning after universities, and they rank above monotechnics and colleges of education respectively.

Just as the standard duration for studying in the universities is four years after which one obtains a Bachelor’s degree, the same applies to polytechnics where the first two years are spent bagging a National Diploma (ND) degree, while the last two years are for obtaining the Higher National Diploma (HND) degree.

There is no much difference between universities and polytechnics in Nigeria presently as a graduate from any of the two institutions is eligible for NYSC posting after spending the required four years of learning at any of both, and in terms of standard of education, the polytechnics in Nigeria are more practical in their curriculum and methods of teaching than the universities which are more theoretical in their approach.

Apart from that, University graduates are more favoured in the labour market mainly because they simply went to the university and not because they are more intelligent than their counterparts from the polytechnics, but irrespective of that, one sure way to become a graduate is to attend a good polytechnic if university education is not forth coming.

Nigerian polytechnics were established for the purposes of providing the society highly skilled manpower that will help develop the nation via skilled labour. This has always been the reason why polytechnic education is mainly focused on practical works. Federal polytechnics in Nigeria are very affordable and they are some of the very best in the country, little wonder the rush by many Nigerian students to attend these polytechnics that are owned by the Federal Government. AUCHI FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC

Auchi Federal Polytechnic is located in Auchi, Edo State. It is one of the oldest polytechnics in Nigeria, established in 1963 first as a technical college and later transformed into a fully-fledged polytechnic in 1973. This polytechnic is a leading academic institution in Nigeria known for its excellence over the years and it was established to train and produce highly skilled middle level manpower to build the nation’s economy across various sectors ranging from engineering to science and technology, environmental management, art and design, etc.

FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC ADO-EKITI

The Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti was established in January 1977 in Jos, Plateau State. In 1978, it was moved by the Federal Government of Nigeria to Akure, Ondo State in order to maintain an equitable spread of Federal Government institutions among the states of the Federation.

In accordance with Decree 33 of 1979, its status was changed from that of a College of Technology to a full-fledged Polytechnic. In 1982, the Institution was once again relocated by the Federal Government to Ado-Ekiti, now the capital of Ekiti State. This was in order to pave way for the establishment of Federal University of Technology at its site in Akure.

By 1986, the movement of the institution to its permanent site was completed. The Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti which had a pioneer student enrollment of 350 (full-time National Diploma) and 95 academic staff in 1978 now has over 10,000 students (full-time and part-time National Diploma and Higher National Diploma, Certificate and Professional programmes) and a total staff strength of about 1,500.

FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC, BALI, TARABA STATE 

The Federal Polytechnic Bali was established after being approved by the Federal Executive Council on Wednesday 14th March, 2007. Following the approval, the Federal Ministry of Education appointed a Ministerial Task Force to ensure a speedy take-off.

The Polytechnic commenced academic activities with the Admission of about 1605 students at the certificate level in the following programmes:

• Remedial Programme in Science and Technology

Following a comprehensive Resource Inspection Visitation by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) carried out between 6th – 9th October, 2010, approval was granted to mount National Diploma Programmes in Accountancy and Statistics and in a subsequent accreditation visitation, between 29th June – 2nd July 2011 approval was granted to mount additional National Diploma programmes in Science Laboratory Technology, Office Technology and Management and Computer science in addition to a Pre-National Diploma programme in Science and Technology.

Based on the approval granted for the initial two programmes the polytechnic received its first batch of National Diploma students from the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) who commenced lectures on 3rd January, 2011.

Presently the Polytechnic has a total staff strength of 351 made-up of 110 academic staff and 241 nonacademic (Both Senior and Junior).

FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC BAUCHI

The Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi (FPTB), was established In July 1979 by decree number 33 (Act.33) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It occupies 750 hectares of land in Gwallameji village along Bauchi-Dass Road in Bauchi metropolis. Since inception, the Polytechnic has continued to grow in population and a number of programmes offered.

FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC BIDA, NIGER STATE 

The Federal Polytechnic Bida began in 1977 following the decision of the Federal Government of Nigeria to move to Bida the then Federal College of Technology, Kano. In the same year the first Principal Professor J. W. Brooks, a Canadian, was appointed on the 5th of September 1977.

The Bida College of Technology as it was called then embarked on the task of recruiting pioneer staff. The first academic session started April 1978 with 211 students and a staff strength of 11 senior staff and 33 junior staff. With the promulgation of Federal Polytechnic Decree number 33 of 1979, the Bida College of Technology automatically became The Federal Polytechnic Bida.

The permanent site of The Federal Polytechnic lies along Bida-Doko Road and covers a land area of about 400 hectares. Physical development of the site started in early 1979 and by October that same year, the administrative staff and some departments had moved to the permanent site. The development continued in phases and the polytechnic is housed comfortably in its permanent site today.

FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC EDE

The Federal Polytechnic Ede came into existence in February, 1992, vide Decree No. 33 of 25th July, 1979 as ammended by Decree 5 of 1993. The functions of the Polytechnic as specified in the decree are as follows:

To provide full-time or part-time courses of instructions and training in:

• Technology, Applied Science, Commerce and Management, and such other fields of applied learning relevant to the needs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the areas of Industrial and Agricultural Production, Distribution and Research in the development and adoption of techniques, as the Academic Board and the Council may from time to time determine
• To arrange conferences, seminars and study group relative to the field of learning specified in paragraph one above.
• To perform such other functions as in the opinion of the Council which may serve to promote the objectives of the Polytechnic

The Polytechnic took over the old Baptist Teachers College from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) which served as the Orientation Camp for the Corps members. This was achieved with the cooperation of Ede Local Government and Osun State Ministry of Education.

The responsibility for establishing and planning the take-off of the Polytechnic was vested in the Task Force committee constituted by the Federal Ministry of Education. In October 1992, interview for Senior Staff was conducted at the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) office, Ibadan, by the task force.

With the arrival of the Pioneer Rector, Chief Jimi Bamgbose from the United States of America, the Polytechnic took off properly in January 1993 and this subsequently paved way for the admission of 847 students (pioneer students) on 13th April, 1993.

FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC EKOWE, BAYELSA STATE

The Federal Polytechnic Oil and Gas, Ekowe, Bayelsa State was established through legislation by the 6th National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria under the Federal Polytechnic Act of 1990 as amended. It was assented into law by late President Umaru Musa Yar’ Adua (GCFR) in July 2007 but full implementation was in 2009. The Polytechnic is cited at the ancient Town of Ekowe (Ekeu) along the River Nun in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State in the Oil & Gas rich Niger-Delta Region of Nigeria. The institution is the first Federal Government higher institution in the state.
